Global Film Celebrities Visit Colombia in October  15 celebrities acted as jurors during the Film Development Fund (FDC) Competitions Major representatives from the global film world visited the country during Colombian Film Week, an event organized by the Colombian Ministry of Culture, where they evaluated pre-selected projects in three categories for the FDC film competitions. Visitors included Vanessa Ragone (Argentina), CEO of Haddock Films and Zona Audiovisual, and Executive Producer of El secreto de sus ojos, the Oscar winner for Best Foreign Film; Steve Solot (USA), President of Latin American Training Center (LATC), a company focusing on Latin America's new generation of filmmakers; Tita Lombardo (Mexico), producer of approximately one thousand commercials, short films, documentaries and music videos, and founder of KMZ Producciones, the company that produced Amores perros and Babel as well as many other films.

Hollywood Buys Rights to Ingrid Betancourt's Book  Kathleen Kennedy, producer of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and The Adventures of Tintin, acquires the rights for one million dollars The Kennedy/Marshall Co. acquired the rights to adapt the book written by Ingrid Betancourt "There Is No Silence That Does Not End: My Six Years of Captivity in the Colombian Jungle" to the silver screen. A spokesperson for producer Kathleen Kennedy confirmed that a screenplay is being developed from the book, which is the story of Betancourt's six years of captivity among the FARC guerrillas, and her rescue at the hands of the Colombian army in July 2008. This new project joins a long list of film and TV productions telling the story of the former presidential candidate from various angles, including a production by writer/director Betty Kaplan, who bought the rights to both books by Carlos Lecompte, Ingrid's former husband; TVE-Spain's television series "Operation Checkmate" focusing on the rescue mission that freed Betancourt, 11 Colombian police officers and soldiers and three US citizens; and several others.

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos Meets in Cartagena with North American Film Reps  The meeting was part of the second "fam trip" (familiarization trip) organized by the Colombian Film Commission On October 21, in Cartagena de Indias, President Juan Manuel Santos met with producers and top-level executives from major insurance and completion bond companies (guaranteeing investors completion of films) as part of the second "fam trip" organized by the Colombian Film Commission (CFC) with support from the Film Development Fund (FDF) and the Ministry of Culture. Representatives from International Film Guarantors, CBS Films, Film Finances, Sterling & Sterling, Journeyman Pictures, Gallagher Entertainment, International Compliance Consulting, Raleigh Studios and other companies took part in the meeting, which led to positive results for the Colombian film industry.

Birth of Colombian Academy of Film Arts and Sciences  First Macondo Awards ceremony during Colombian Film Week The very first Macondo Awards ceremony took place on Oct. 21, officially launching the Colombian Academy of Film Arts and Sciences. The Academy is a private, independent, democratic and autonomous not-for-profit enterprise comprised of professionals dedicated to the various film-related trades and enjoys the support and recognition of the Colombian Ministry of Culture's Film Office and PROIMÁGENES Colombia. The 246 current members of the Academy considered 18 films produced or co-produced in Colombia and released in the past two years to selectnominees in 11 categories covering the artistic and creative work of film professionals in Colombia, as well as a Special Prize. From now on the Academy will be in charge of presenting the National Film Awards, the winners of which are presented with a Macondo statuette inspired by the inexhaustible universe of Colombia's greatest story-teller and Nobel Prize winner, Gabriel García Márquez.

 | Mónika Wagenberg Named New Director of Cartagena International Film Festival (FICCI) Born in Bogotá. Due to her experience, knowledge and contact with the current global film scene, she was chosen by the FICCI's Board of Directors to head the Cartagena International Film Festival, the oldest festival of its kind in Latin America. Wagenberg has a Masters in Cinema Studies from NYU, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude. From 1997 to 1999 she interned at the Cinema Study Center (Latin American Film Analysis) and catalogued Paul Lenti's Film Collection before going on to work in the film department at New York City's Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). From 1999 to 2001, she worked as a Distribution Associate at New York Films.
Monika was an international programmer for the first, third and fourth New York International Latino Film Festival; from 2000 to 2006 she worked for the Lincoln Center Film Society's New York Film Festival, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the New Directors/New Films Festival (also for the Lincoln Center Film Society), as head of Guest Services and enjoyed direct contact with visiting directors, producers and actors. Wagenberg is co-founder and co-director since 2001 of Cinema Tropical, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to programming, distributing and promoting Latin American films in the US and, since 2005, has also directed the Latin Wave Festival, Houston's annual Latin American Film Festival at the Museum of Fine Arts. Starting in 2006, she acted as Head of Programming for the Ibero-American Films section and Director of Encounters at the Miami International Film Festival. In 2009, as delegate of the Zurich International Latin American Film Festival, she began recommending the best films for the festival's Official Selection. In 2009 and 2010, Monika acted as programmer and curator for official selections at drama and documentary contests and participated in the 50th FICCI's Ibero-American Film Exhibit.

Official Poster 1,464 Short Films Made Simultaneously in 16 Different Cities throughout Colombia
From October 29 through November 1, simultaneously and in 16 cities throughout the country, the 4th National Audiovisual Production and Exhibition Marathon - IMAGINATON 2010/2011, will take place. This unique event turns all of Colombia into a film set for one weekend out of the year. IMAGINATON is a contest open to the public and divided into two sections: the Production Marathon, in which anybody can participate, using any type of camera – from cell phones to film cameras, in two major categories (amateurs and professionals) to produce a one-minute, single sequence film made in a single weekend that will compete for a prize of 40 million pesos (about 20,000 USD); and the Exhibition Marathon, which this year gathered together a total of 10 hours of Colombian animation made over the last 10 years, including 28 short films and 2 features.
