Production Ends in Colombia on Feature Film "Mama Coca"
mamacoca.jpg
Documentary co-produced by Turkish director Fatih Akim's German company Corazon International
Shooting ended in Colombia on the feature documentary Mama Coca by Turkish-German director Suzan Sekerci. The director's second feature is produced by Storytellers, a company created especially for this film, and by Chroma TV (Los herederos de Django), in association with Corazón Internacional, a production company responsible for well-known films such as the Cannes 2007 winner The Edge of Heaven and Head-on, a 2004 winner at the Berlin Film Festival, both directed by Fatih Akin. Mama Coca was shot on location in the town of San Agustin, one of the countries most important archeological sites and home to the Yanacuna Indians. Shooting also took place in Medellin with featured hip hop group FB7, in Bogotá and in Santa Marta. The film deals with the problems created by the enormous Europe and US consumption of cocaine and the consequences for a country like Colombia. It explores the lives of Colombians, how they survive drug trafficking and paramilitary and guerrilla organizations, and how the conflict is fed by foreign cocaine consumption. The project has received grants from the German Federal Film Board (FFA) in Berlin, the Kuratorium Junger Deutscher Film in Wiesbaden and the Filmförderung Schleswig Holstein in Hamburg.

testimonio

iainsmith.jpg

I think you are all embarked on the right journey but it will take time to reach the destination you are striving for. To change attitudes and to build up a sufficiency of confidence for larger movies to come to Colombia will. I believe your efforts will yield dividends in time, and that you have simply to keep on doing what you're already doing. It was especially amazing to hear the President speaking so enthusiastically about film in Colombia, and so positively about the inward investment work of the film commission. That message means quite simply that incoming filmmakers are welcome in Colombia, and that they will be supported and protected at the highest administrative levels.

Personally, I was of course delighted to return to your beautiful country. It was particularly moving to revisit where we had shot "The Mission" so many years ago, and to see how everything has blossomed since those more troubled times. I tell everyone who will listen about the change, and will encourage production planners to include Colombia in their thinking wherever possible. I even had a meeting with the big chiefs at Pinewood/Shepperton to tell them of the trip, and to say that they had placed their Dominican Republic studio in the wrong place, and that Bogota would have been a smarter investment.

Iain Smith, President of Applecross Productions after his fam trip
