Porfirio Tours World Festivals Colombian co-production directed by Alejandro Landes screens in Toronto, San Sebastian and Biarritz Slowly but surely, Porfirio (Colombia, Spain, Uruguay, Argentina, France) directed by Alejandro Landes Echavarría is becoming one of the most notable of all recently released Colombian films. In September the film was chosen for the Visions section of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) focusing on the most experimental projects using new technologies that push the limits of contemporary film, poetic works that bring a radical, innovative perspective to film and the art of narration. Porfirio also received praised following its screening in the "Latin Horizons" section of the San Sebastian Film Festival, and last week at the 20th Biarritz Film Festival, a major event for Latin American films in Europe, it took both the Jury Prize and the Best Actor award for Portirio Ramirez Aldana's performance. Operation Sodoma: The Fall of Mono Jojoy shows the enormous challenge of locating this guerrilla, who projected an aura of invincibility as he moved stealthily and unexpectedly from camp to camp in one of the most inaccessible of jungle regions. The documentary was co-produced with Discovery Channel, Semana Magazine, RCN and Imagina US and produced by Lulo Films under the direction of Jaime Escallon Buraglia, with executive production by Juan Pablo Santos, Alejandro Santos and Julian Giraldo and production by Ximena Sotomayor. | Successful End to Bogota Youth Symphony Orchestra "Batuta"'s European Tour After 10 concerts in Germany and Italy, the first international tour by the Bogota Youth Symphony Orchestra "Batuta" finished up with two concerts in Rome – one of them for the Pope. The 'Via dei Concerti' tour included concerts at the Young Euro Classic Festival in Berlin, in major city plazas and theaters in Trento, Verona, Florence and Cremona, home of the famed Stradivari family, creators of the world's most famous violins. The concerts garnered the attention of specialized press that had the following to say: "If this is the opening, and a rather unofficial one aimed at music lovers in Ferriere, we can expect total success in city plazas and theaters all along the "Via dei Concerti" in our province." (Cristian Brusamonti, La Libertá), and "They literally enchanted the audience with their impeccable precision, expressive technique and skill, power and contagious energy, not to mention the joy they exude when playing music. Music without borders or confines, which includes many cultures in its mix of Italian melodies and joyful Latin American rhythms and emotions." (Manuela Iannotta, La Cronaca di Piacenza). See more >> Our rehearsals were purely mechanical. I'd ask him to repeat the phrases because I was looking for something automatic; I didn't want him to think about what he was saying, I just wanted him there. We don't think and rethink most of the things we do or say during the course of a day; we just do them or say them. That's what I was looking for from Porfirio; I didn't want him to come across as anything other than what he is. I wanted to get away from acting and was looking for a presence (…) I'm not all that interested in genres. I wasn't thinking in fiction or in documentary or trying to fit what I was trying to do into any one genre. I was producing sensations that seemed interesting to me. This led me to choose several real locations, people with no acting training, to create a kind of imagined reality. Much of what you see on the screen – the relationships and places – don't exist exactly as they appear; they're just pieces of reality that together create a parallel reality (…) The premier in Cannes was very special, an incredible experience for me and for the film. From that moment on I realized people have a hard time classifying the film; it causes a strange and disquieting buzz. Documentary "fans" find it interesting, but so do those into fiction because of the very stylized direction and visual character, which contrasts with the natural feel of the people in it, the way they move through the spaces, a certain very natural presence especially in the actors. This particularly has created something unexpected and disquieting because people don't know how to label the film and they're unsure as to how much of what they're seeing does or doesn't exist in the "real" world. It's difficult to watch the film from a comfortable distance. This has happened in all the different places where it has screened.
