| A summary of a day at famous St. Maartens "Princess Juliana International Airport" back in 2008, taken with a small camcorder on a cruise stop at St. Maarten. The airport is located directly at the beach on the island of the Netherlands Antilles.
Really impressive to watch large passenger jets like the 747 are landing or taking off at the airport, only a few meters away from your camera. Funny: The arrival times of the airliner are written with chalk on a surfboard at the "Sunset Bar", located directly at the beach.
When you stand at the beach during a take off phase, you literally feel sandblasted and who is careless or reckless, will soon find himself a few meters back or even blasted into the sea (this really happens). Some guys try to "surf" the exhaust gas stream while hanging at the airport fence as seen in the video. The scenes, taken directly from the fence in the movie are not taken by me, but from a friend who provided them. They show, how powerful and indeed dangerous the jet blast could be, even from large aircraft. Thats why there is a big danger sign at the beach, that warns of severve harm the jet blast could cause. There actually have been some incidents of that kind in the last years, so you better mind the warn sign, when you are visiting Maho Beach at St. Maarten airport!
Main intention of the clip is to show landings and take offs from different aircraft at Princess Juliana Airport. So decide for yourselves whether landing or take off is more spectacular. As mentioned above, the clip was taken with a small (not HD, yes we've had a time with "no HD" ;-)) camcorder.

Kleiner Zusammenschnitt vom berühmten St. Maarten Airport, der direkt hinter dem Badestrand der Insel auf den Niederländischen Antillen liegt. Aufgenommen mit einem kleinen Camcorder (DV) während einer Kreuzfahrt in 2008.
Wirklich beeindruckend, wenn große Passagierjets wie die 747 (das Highlight) in wenigen Metern Kamera-Entfernung über den Sandstrand hinweg landen. Die Ankunftszeiten der Airliner stehen übrigens stilecht mit Kreide auf einem Surfboard an der Strandbar.
Während des Starts fühlt man sich - am Strand stehend - regelrecht wie sandgestrahlt - ganz "mutige" Zeitgenossen hängen sich während der Startphase im Abgasstrahl an den Zaun des Airports und wer unachtsam oder leichtsinnig ist, findet sich schnell einige Meter weiter im Meer wieder (passiert wirklich). Die Aufnahmen "vom Zaun" sind nicht von mir, wurden mir aber für diesen Clip zur Verfügung gestellt. Sie zeigen, wie kraftvoll und auch gefährlich das "surfen" am Zaun sein kann, gerade bei großen Maschinen. Daher ist auch das Warnschild direkt am Airport angebracht und in der Tat hat es einige Vorfälle mit Verletzungen von unachtsamen oder zu wagemutigen Menschen in den letzen Jahren gegeben. Also, wenn ihr Maho Beach besucht, denkt besser an das Warnschild!
Hauptsächlich geht es im Film um die spektakulären Landungen und Starts. Entscheidet einfach selbst, ob Landung oder Start (Steigrate!!) spektakulärer sind. |
